Our story
A family-owned running store, founded in 1998. Toolen's Running Start is a place for all your running and walking needs.
How it started
In June 1998, Mike Toolen opened the store in a quiet strip mall in Fairview Heights, Illinois. He had retired from a long career in government and wanted to work in running. He had spent most of his life in St. Louis, and there was no running store like it on the Illinois side of the river.
Mike was a racer himself, competing in about 60 events a year, from 5Ks to marathons. He credits a core group of running friends for the store's early success, many of them driving over from St. Louis.
Growing in Shiloh
The store later moved to a larger location in Shiloh, Illinois, added more products, and started race management and timing. Today it has a hand in about 100 events a year and offers marathon training and weekly speed work sessions.
Mike's sons, Sean and Andy, work alongside him, so the store is now in its second generation. The walls are filled with the family's trophies, medals, and race bibs.

Every March we host the Top of the Morning 5K, starting and finishing at the store. Walkers, first-timers and fast runners line up together, kids get their own race, and everyone celebrates afterward with food and Irish entertainment.

What this website collects
This website does not use cookies, analytics, advertising trackers, or tracking pixels, and it does not store information about you in your browser. You can browse every page without giving us any personal information.
Appointment and race timing requests
When you send the "Book a visit" or "Tell us about your race" form, the information you enter (such as your name, phone or email, the shoe, color, size and width you want to try, your requested day and time, race details, and any notes) is sent to the store by email and saved in a spreadsheet kept by the store. We use Make.com to receive these requests and Microsoft 365 (Excel in OneDrive) to store them, so those companies process this information on our behalf. We use it only to answer your request, schedule your visit, or discuss your event, and we keep it only as long as we need it for those purposes and our business records.
Phone, email and in-store information
If you contact us or shop in the store, we may keep the information you give us, such as your name, contact details, and purchase history, to serve you and keep business records. We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not share it with others for their own marketing.
Race results, photos and video
For races we time, results including participant names, ages or age groups, bib numbers, and finish times are published as part of the event, as described in each race's registration terms. Photos and video taken at public race events may appear on this site and our social media. To ask us to remove your image or correct a result, contact us and we will make reasonable efforts to help.
Other websites and services
This site loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means your browser connects to Google and shares your IP address with them. Form requests are handled by Make.com and Microsoft as described above. Results files are hosted on Google Drive and some results on ChronoTrack. We also link to Facebook, Instagram, X, Google Maps, and our other website. Those services have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they handle your information. Our web host may also keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and pages requested, for security and operation.
Customer accounts
If you sign in on the My Shoes page, we use your email address to send you a one-time sign-in link. If you ask staff to connect your account, we link your email to your customer name in our store records and show you the shoe purchases recorded under that name (brand, model, size, width, color and date). If you save shoes to your list, we store the shoe, color and sizing you saved so staff can prepare for your visit. Sign-in and these records are stored with Supabase, which processes them on our behalf, and database rules allow each signed-in customer to see only their own records. Store staff can see customers' shoe history and saved lists to help with fittings and to connect accounts. If you turn on name lookup in My Shoes, anyone who types your full name on our home page can see your shoe brands, models, sizes and widths, never your notes, email or phone. You can turn it off any time, and we keep a record of when you turned it on. Signing in keeps you signed in on that device until you sign out. To see, correct or delete your account and records, contact us.
Children
This website is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them online. Parents or guardians should send requests for youth races. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Your choices
You can ask us to view, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you by calling or emailing the store. We will respond within a reasonable time, subject to records we must keep by law.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we keep. No method of storing or sending information online is completely secure, and email is not encrypted end to end, so please do not email sensitive information like payment card numbers.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top shows when it last changed.

Requesting a time does not book it. Your visit is confirmed only when the store replies to you.

They are not medical advice and do not replace advice from a doctor, physical therapist, or other qualified professional. Talk with your doctor before starting a new exercise program, especially if you have a health condition or injury. You take part in physical activity at your own risk. Each race and training program may require its own registration, waiver, and release.

They are used only to identify products sold in our store and do not mean those companies sponsor or endorse this website. Product images belong to their respective owners. All other content on this site, including text, logos, photos, and video, belongs to Toolen's Running Start or is used with permission. Please do not copy it for commercial use without our written permission.
